[Also in Group X] Door-operating apparatus.- In a sliding panel-type closure in which the panels 20-23, Fig. 10, are hinged together about their adjacent longitudinal edges and have runners 44 at their ends engaging guide rails 45, the rails have a bend around which the runners have to pass when the closure is moved from its closed position to an open position out of the way. As shown applied to a garage door the guide rollers 44 are secured on brackets 45a of increasing lengths from the bottom to the top of the door and the guides 45 slope slightly inwardly at the top so that on opening the door it moves back away from the sides of the door opening. The door is counterbalanced at each side by a cable 46 which is secured to eye 52 and passes round ear 51, guide pulley 47, and pulley 48, and is attached at 53 to the top of the door opening. The pulley 48 is carried by a pulley - block attached to coil spring 50. Hinges.-Adjacent panels are connected at their sides by pivots as shown in Fig. 12, in which a pivot pin 38 carried by a member 33 fixed to the upper panel 21 engages a hole in the upper end of the edge member of the lower panel 20, the member 33 being slightly cranked at 37 to clear the edge member; the member 33 is fixed to the panel 21 by bolts 33b, which are relieved of shear stress by the member 33 abutting against a formation 31a pressed up from the edge member of the panel. Additional bearing surface is provided by a member 34 fixed to the lower panel 20 and formed with a concave upper end to receive a rounded lower end 35 of the member 33. The adjacent edges of the panels overlap to provide a weather-tight connection as shown in Fig. 9, and are connected at the middle of their length by a double hinge 41, 42, 40.
