To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, EDWARD H. MoCLoUD, a citizen of the United States, residing at Columbus, in the county of Franklin and State of Ohio, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Doors or Shutters, of which the following is a specification.

The object of this invention is a construction of door or shutter in which the several sections or panels are in balanced relation and simultaneously and easily moved to opening or closing position. With an installation of such a construction as herein contemplated half the closing element may extend exteriorly while the other half extends interiorly of the building. Other objects will appear from the following description.

The invention is embodied in the example herein particularly shown and set forth, the features of novelty being finally claimed.

In the accompanying drawings- F i ure 1 is an elevation of one side of the closec l door, the other side (not shown) being a symmetrical duplicate except as to the counterweighting apparatus and operating mechanism which appears on the side shown.

In the views 5 designates the upper panel or door section which is shown as hinged to the building at 6 at the top of the door opening to swing outward when opened. 7 designates the lower panel. The lower corners of the lower panel are provided with laterally projecting stud shafts equipped with rollers 8 like those indicated in Fig. 1 to travel in channels 9 at the opposite sides of the door opening. Hingedly connected to the upper edge of the upper panel or at a point near thereto and the corresponding edge of the lower panel is a bar 10, and hingedly connecting the lower edge of the upper panel and the corresponding edge of the lower panel is a bar 11. The hinging point 12 of the bar 10 with the lower panel, and the hinging point 13 of the bar 11 with the lower edge of the upper panel are each offset in opposite directions from the plane of movement of the lower end of the lower panel between the Serial No. 471,450.

Any smal opening between the upper and lower panels when in closed position can be covered by a strip 15 secured along the lower edge of the upper panel so as to leave a projecting margin for the purpose stated.

The forms and arrangement of parts can be changed without departin from the gist of the invention as claimed.

What I claim is:

1. A closure for a door or window opening including, in combination, an upper closing panel hinged at its uper edge to a fixed point, to open at one side only of the opening to be closed, a lower closing panel sliding at its lower end to open at the opposite side only of the opening to be closed, anoperating bar hingedly connecting the upper edge of the lower panel to a fixed point near the upper edge of the upper panel, an operating bar hingedly connecting thelower edge of the upper panel to the lower edge of the lower panel, and guiding means for the lower edge of the lower fit) .ing at its lower end to open at opposite side only of the openii closed, an operating har hingedly upper edge of the lower panel point near the upper edge on the upper peneh'an operating her hingediy connecting the lower edge er the upper panel to the lower edge of the lower penal, guiding meansfor the lower edge or" the lower panel, the hinging points of said bars with the lower edge of the upper panel with the upper edge'of the lower panel. being offset from the plane of movement of the lower edge of the lower panel when the panels are in closed position, said bars being curved to reach around the swinging edges of said panels.

3. A closure for an opening in a building Wall comprising top and bottom closure members pivotally supported for a swinging opening and. closing movement, end means connecting the top and bottom ends of one member to the top and hottorn ends of the othermember and operating upon the opening or closing swinging movement of one member to impart a like movement to the other member, the pivotal connections of the members relatively approaching and receding from each other during the opening or closing movements respectively.

4. A closure for an opening in a building wall comprisin top and bottom closure members, said opening being defined in part by side members each having a guidewa extending vertically from one end thereo one of said closure members being pivotally supported to swing with respect to said opening, guide means carried at one end of the other closure member, said guide means extending into and being movable in said guideways, and links connecting the top and bottom ends of one closure memher with the like ends of the other closure member.
