Abstract

743,012. Electromagnetic switches. GENERAL RAILWAY SIGNAL CO. April 16. 1953 [May 27, 1952], No. 10421/53. Class 38(5) An electromagnetic relay for carrying relatively heavy currents in railway signalling systems, where contact bounce or vibration is undesirable, comprises a pair of spring contact members 27, 28 biased into engagement, but movable out of engagement by a contact operator 41 carried by armature 7 and so arranged that when the contacts are closed the armature is disconnected from them. The contact member 27, 28 of which there may be several pairs, are mounted on brackets 25 carried by an insulating base plate 5. This base plate also bears two magnetic cores with polepieces 6, which cores carry energizing windings 8, the armature 7 being pivoted on trunnions 12 mounted on bracket support 9 and so spaced in relationship to the pole pieces that it moves up when the coils are energized to open the contacts by means of operator 41 and downwards under gravity and pressure of spring 20 to allow the contact to close, upon de-energization. Pins 14 determine the minimum airgap, while downward armature movement is limited by set screw 18 in a back stop member 15 carried by the base plate 5. For reducing contact bounce and vibration the contact members may have similar weights but different periods of vibration by the normal pressure between the arcuate contact 38 on member 27 and the contact button 36, which may be of silver, on member 28 is a little less than the pressure as measured at contact 36 between member 28 and limit arm 29: the centres of percussion and of gravity of member 27 are at the centre of contact 38. A modification is described in which the movable spring contact members of a multiple assembly are moved simultaneously by a pusher which engages them with lost motion to allow for the disconnection in the closed contact position, the pusher being moved by a spring-loaded armature. Figs. 3. 4 (not shown). Specification 318,916, [Class 38(v)], is referred to.
