Abstract

A thermoplastic film product comprises a thermoplastic film in which is embedded fibres which extend only partially through the film, the film having a thickness between 0.15 and 1.5 mils and the fibres being in a substantially discontinuous phase and a substantial number of the fibres being partially embedded in the film. The film may be of polyethylene, polyvinylidene chloride (polymer or copolymer), polyvinyl alcohol, polyvinyl acetate, polyvinyl chloride acetate, polyamide or rubber hydrochloride. The fibres, of cellulose, asbestos or glass, may be <PICT:0742710/IV(a)/1> in the form of a thin loose web, which is preferably creped. As shown (Fig. 2) a loose web 3 of cellulosic tissue is fed from a roll 5 over stretching rollers into the nip 15 of a soft rubber roll 11 and a chrome surfaced roll 13. A film of plastic 16 is extruded from a device 17 into the nip 15 in a viscous condition. The fibres of the web are forced into one face of the film while the opposite face is simultaneously cooled and hardened. The composite product is collected, if desired, after stretching. Multiple plies of tissue may be used.
