A trapping and severing device for use in splicing on selected needles, comprises blades 6, 7, 8 contained in a groove 2, ending in a slot 3, in a, relatively slender holder 1, there being provision for relative movement between the holder 1 with the blades 6 and 7 on the one hand and the blade 8 on the other. When the blade 8 is the fixed member, the yarn is cut consistently close to the needles. As here shown, it is the blade 8 which is movable. The blades 6, 7 are located by lugs 9 in a slot 5 in the holder and at transverse cutting and trapping edges on their lower ends 6c, 7b coact with the sharpened top edge of a lateral extension 8b on the blade 8. By means of an eye 8e, the blade 8 can be raised or lowered, to sever and trap or to release the thread, within limits determined by shoulders 8c, 8f. The holder 1 is contained in a blade retaining housing 11, itself contained in the bossed end of a lever 12 pivoted on the latch ring post 8 rocked by the main control unit, through link 21, to raise and lower the trapping and severing unit to inoperative and operative positions. The butts. of jacks 16 associated with needles which are to take a splicing thread, pass down a cam 26 on to a levelling cam 27 and, when the trapping and severing unit is operative, pass under a cam 28 which, by reason of a part 28a thereon, is raised by the leading butt and so, through a lever 29, Bowden cable 30 and a bell-crank lever 10, depresses the blade 8, to release the previously trapped thread. The cam 28 is held lifted whilst the succeeding butts of the group pass and then falls, allowing a spring 15 to lift the blade 8 and so trap and sever the thread. As the unit is raised to inoperative position, before knitting a heel or toe, an arm 31 on the link 21 rocks the lever 29, to raise the cam 28 so that it cannot be subject to the action of jack butts : the splicing thread may then be taken into a main trapper provided on the dial cap of the welt mechanism.
