Abstract
742,409. Stuffing - box substitutes. KLEIN, A., and BACH, E. March 24, 1953 [March 25, 1952], No. 7996/53. Class 122(5) A shaft seal comprises a packing ring 2, preferably of artificial rubber, having a body part firmly held in a rigid casing 1 and a flexible sealing lip 3 pressed against the shaft by a plate type spring 4 comprising separate resilent fingers extending from a flat strip shaped to form 'an unflanged cylinder 9, the inner and outer portions of the fingers respectively abutting the body part of the ring 2 and the sealing lip. The springs are formed by stamping out a spring steel strip to produce two identical combs each comprising a strip 5, 6 and resilient fingers 7, 8. The combs are bent to U-shape in cross section and then bent into a ring, the ends of the strip being connected either permanently, as by welding or riveting, or detachably, as by a bayonet connection. The strips may be reinforced by beading, &c. or they may be made of thicker material than the fingers. In a modification, Fig. 10 (not shown), the sealing lip is pressed against a side face or collar on the shaft, the spring being substantially' L-shape in cross-section.
