Class 145 [Also in Group XI] A method of shaping wood comprises heating moisture-laden wood rapidly in a high-frequency electric field, bending the heated wood into a desired shape and then subjecting the wood to a less intense field for a period of time necessary to stabilize the shaping and reduce the moisture content of the wood to 8 per cent to 10 per cent. The initial moisture content of the wood may be between 30 per cent and 45 per cent and the power applied for rapid heating may be 50 k.W. per cu. ft. to raise the temperature of the wood to 90‹-100‹C in a few minutes, the subsequent less intense heating being carried out at 8 k.W. per cu. ft. for a few hours. The electrodes for establishing the high-frequency field may be made from'metal foil, for example, phosphor bronze, and form permanent parts of or be attached to the bending means.
