Abstract

741,512. Soldering irons. AITA, P. Aug. 6, 1953 [Aug. 27, 1952], No. 21765/53. Class 83 (4). [Also in Group XI] A hollow ferrous soldering bit 16 is heated by imperfect contact therewith of an iron or copper block 16 with a serrated or taped end 16a in the bit and heated by passing current through the block 16 and the bit 14. The block 16 is of copper, iron or stainless metal and is pressed by a spring 20 against the bit 14, which is of iron or iron alloyed with 34 per cent of nickel and may be fitted with a cup 26, Fig. 4, not shown, for solder. Low voltage from an accumulator or transformer is fed through a lead 2 to a supply socket 6 and through leads 3, 4 in parallel to a socket 7, the lead 3 having therein, an inductive resistance which may be short-circuited by a manual switch 5 in the lead 4. The switch 5 is mounted in a hollow insulating handle 1. The sides of the metal block 16 are insulated at 15 from the bit 14, which is electrically connected by a lead 17 to a metal support 11 with pins 9, 10 engaging the sockets 6, 7. The pin 9 is welded to the support 11 for supplying current to the metal block 16; and the pin 10 is insulated by sleeves 12 from the support 11 and is attached to the bit 14. In Fig. 1 a spring 20 on an extension 21 of the bit presses on a bell-cranked member 18 pivoted at 19 on the support 11, the other arm of the crank 18 bearing on the end of the metal block 16 to press the latter against the bit and allowing ready removal of the block 16. In Fig. 3 the bit 14 is arranged axially of the handle and is welded at one side to the pin 10 and at the other side 22a to a metal member 22. The pin 10 and member 22 are attached to the metal support 11 and are insulated therefrom by sleeves 12, 23. The spring 20 pressing the block 16 against the bit is mounted between buttons 24, 25.
