Abstract

The process of the parent Specification, according to which fat is extracted from bones by feeding them with a liquid continuously to a container wherein they are subjected to repeated intense impacts delivered through the medium of the liquid to rupture the fat containing cells without reducing the bones to cell size or less, to give a resulting mixture of fat, solid residues and liquid, is applied to material of vegetable origin. The material is preferably passed with the liquid through a highspeed hammer mill, and the free fat is then removed from the mixture, preferably by a two-stage separation wherein the solid is separated in the first stage and the fat from the mixture of fat and liquid in the second stage. The separations may be effected centrifugally. In the second stage it may be necessary to heat the mixture to a temperature above the melting point of the fat. The speed of rotation of the mill may be from 2,000 to 5,000 r.p.m. for an 8-inch diameter mill, the quantity of liquid being preferably at least three times the weight of the vegetable material. The mixture is subjected to the impacts for a period of not more than 10 seconds. The liquid may be water, preferably at room temperature. The materials specified in examples comprise coconut, palm kernels and fruits, olives and tung seeds. Specification 722,311 is referred to.
