Abstract
741,272. Aircraft framework. VERWALTUNGSGES. DER WERKZEUGMASCHINENFABRIK OERLIKON. Dec. 17, 1953 [Jan. 17, 1953], No. 35206/53. Class 4. [Also in Groups XXI and XXII] A rocket casing, Figs. 1 and 2, is formed by coiling metal tubing around longitudinal stringers 1, adjacent turns of the tubing being bonded together and to the stringers. The tubing in section may be a closed curve either circular or flattened or may be open along part of the periphery as in Fig. 6. Figs. 7 and 8 show tubing flattened on two opposing sides with a bulge on a third side and a recess on the fourth which receives the bulge of an adjacent turn. The stringers, which are metal, may be longitudinally corrugated. The tubing may have cambered surfaces to relieve the bonding agent from tensile stresses. To form the casing, a collapsible reel with longitudinal bars conforming to the finished contour is used. The stringers 1 are placed on the bars and their outer faces coated with the bonding agent. The recessed wall of tubing, such as shown in Figs. 7 and 8, is filled with the bonding agent and the tubing is wound by turning the reel. A guide carriage fitted with guide rollers is used to bring adjacent turns into contact. When the coiling is finished, the surface of the completed casing is coated with the bonding agent, which is then dried by circulating hot air or by highfrequency heating. The reel is then collapsed and removed from the coiled body.
