Abstract
806,426. Altering physical structure. DU PONT DE NEMOURS & CO., E.I. Feb. 19, 1957 [July 11, 1956], No. 5663/57. Class 83 (4). [Also in Group XXI] A method of hardening the inner surface of an austenitic manganese steel hollow body 1 comprises positioning a layer of a detonating explosive composition 2 on the outer surface of the body inserting a mandrel 3 of a deformation - resistant material inside said body, so dimensioned that there is a reasonably close fit between it and the body, and initiating said explosive charge. The explosive layer 2 may be applied as a preformed sleeve, may be coated on the body in a paste or slurry, may be wrapped around the body in the form of ribbon, sheet or tape or may consist of a packaged loose explosive composition. The mandrel may be of hardened tool steel, soft iron, copper, aluminium, temperered glass or ceramics. The charge is exploded by an electric initiator 4. U.S.A.
