457,947. Aircraft framework. ATWOOD, H. N., South Lyndeboro, New Hampshire, U.S.A. Oct. 2, 1935, No. 27209. [Class 4] [See also Groups XXVIII and XXIII] A tubular structural element 11 for aircraft &c., is made by coating and impregnating a strip or strips 10 of wood veneer with cellulosic plastic material by dipping the veneer into a bath of acetone solution containing about 5 per cent by weight of cellulose acetate &c., allowing the strips to dry, and then winding them in one or more superposed layers on to a mandrel 9 of the necessary shape, the strips being sprayed with cellulose from a nozzle 12 during the winding operation. Instead of spraying the cellulose it may be applied as dry sheets, the element thus formed being subjected to heat and pressure. The element is then allowed to set or dry, and afterwards it is removed from the mandrel and dipped into a second acetone bath, finally being placed on a finishing mandrel and allowed to dry. Figs. 16 and 17 respectively show cross-sections of the fuselage and landing gear of an aeroplane made in this manner, a mandrel of corresponding shape being used. Several elements may be bonded together to form a structural unit of any convenient shape or size ; the elements are placed on finishing mandrels 13, coated with cellulose, assembled in a press 16, and subjected to pressure, and, if necessary, heat. Fig. 15 shows the sustaining wing 22 of an aeroplane formed of a plurality of laminated elements 23 bonded together and provided with an outer covering 24 of cellulose.
