Abstract
741,098. Purifying &c. water &c. PERMUTIT CO., Ltd. March 17, 1954 [March 24, 1953], No. 8109/53. Class 46. In an ion-exchange process, particles of ionexchange material flow in dispersion in the liquid and turbulence is imposed on relatively slow longitudinal motion of the particles. Water such as tap water flows upwardly through ionexchange material, such as beads of a sulphonated styrene co-polymer, moving downwards in a tubular vessel 20 and being gradually withdrawn from the base thereof to be fed by the head of water in the vessel 20 to the top of a tubular vessel 23 for regeneration and rinsing. Annular partitions divide the vessel 23 into compartments in each of which is a disc or set of vanes mounted upon a vertical shaft, rotation of which creates the turbulence. Material descends in the vessel against an upward flow of softened water introduced at the bottom, this flow, in the upper part of the vessel, carrying with it regenerant entering the vessel midway at 24. The rate of flow is controlled by adjusting the discs or one of them relatively to the annular portion or the adjacent one. Treated water fed by a pump 31 actuates an injector 30 to feed the regenerated material back to the top of the vessel 20. Regeneration and rinsing may be effected in separate vessels and the spent ion-exchange material be withdrawn from the top of the treating vessel. The agitation vessel may be arranged horizontally.
