Abstract
740,710. Partitions and baffles in boiler water space. BABCOCK & WILCOX, Ltd. Feb. 22, 1954 [Feb. 24, 1953], No. 5184/53. Class 123(2). A water-tube boiler has a steam and water drum 1 mounted with its ends 24 projecting beyond the setting 23, rows of steam generating tubes such as 5, 6 and a row of downcomer tubes 2 being arranged along the portion of the drum within the setting and connecting the drum with the circulating system of the boiler. The generating tubes discharge into chambers 13, 14 in the drum, the steam-water mixture passing from the chambers into two rows of centrifugal separators 20, for example of the form described in Specification 526,825. The chambers 13, 14 are connected by transfer ducts 19, the downcomers 2. opening into the spaces between these ducts. To increase the rate of heating of the ends 24 of the drum during steam raising and so to prevent the occurrence of dangerous thermal stresses, the endmost downcomers 2a, 2b, 2c are supplied with water through a duct 26 the open, flared end 27 of which is located near the end 24 of the drum so that, in operation, a flow of heated water from the mid-portion to the end portion of the drum occurs, this flow being assisted by providing each end separator 20a with a discharge spout 29 directed towards the adjacent drum end. The end separators 20a are of the form described in Specification 562,806, [Group II].
