740,657. Regulating and indicating liquid levels. FLIGHT REFUELLING Ltd., and JONES, E. C. July 26, 1954 [Aug. 31, 1953], No. 24031/53. Class 123(1) The supply of liquid to a receptable such as a fuel tank 10 is cut off, when the liquid reaches a desired level, by an electric switch 24 actuated by a magnetic armature 25 which projects from a pivotally mounted member, such as a pulley 23, and is movable by means controlled by a float 16 the arm 15 of which is pivoted on a carriage 14 manually adjustable to the required level; alternatively, the switch controls an indicator device such as a lamp. The switch 24 and armature pulley 23, separated by a non-magnetic diaphragm, not shown, are located in a housing 22 formed integral with a plate 11 which closes an aperture in the bottom of the tank and supports two upstanding pillars 12, 13 on which the carriage 14 is slidably mounted, the carriage having a pair of depending arms 26 to which are pivoted at 28 two spaced rectangular plates 27 mounting corner pulleys 29, 31, 33, 32 and the float arm 15. A wire 36, 37 forms a bight around the pulley 23 to which it is secured by a screw 35, and the two said ends 36, 37 are engaged, respectively, with the pulleys 32, 31 and 33, 29 and are clamped at 34 to a fixed member 20 at the top of the column 13. As shown the wire parts cross one another at the centre of the plates 27, the arrangement being such that movement of the float arm 15 about the pivot 28 will vary the effective lengths of the wires 36, 37 in opposite senses and effect part rotation of the pulley 23 and, with it, movement of the armature 25 to actuate the switch 24. The wire 36, 37 may be in two separate lengths and the pulley 23 may be replaced by a rocking arm; alternatively a single wire engaging either the pulley 29, 33 or 31, 32 may be used, provided the pulley 23 is spring- controlled. The carriage 14 is adjusted vertically by a graduated depending tube 17 which projects through a gland 19 in the plate 11 and is fitted with a handle 21; the tube 17 also houses a tube 43 and is free for limited turning movement in the carriage 14 so as to open the tube 43 to the fuel tank at a level slightly above the desired level and so permit fuel to escape down the tube 43 in the event of, and to indicate, overfilling.
