Abstract
An electric conductor is insulated with a layer of natural rubber or a rubbery butadiene-styrene copolymer, a tie layer comprising a mixture of the same kind of rubber, a vinyl resin and an oil-resistant copolymer which is a plasticizer of the vinyl resin, and a protective layer comprising a mixture of the same vinyl resin and plasticizer, the rubber being vulcanized and the layers coalesced at their interfaces. The tie layer preferably contains from 10-70 per cent by weight of the rubber and from 90-30 per cent of the vinyl resin and plasticizer, and may be applied as two or more coatings, the inner containing a higher proportion of rubber than the outer. The vinyl resin may be polyvinyl chloride or a copolymer of vinyl chloride with a lesser amount of copolymerizable monomeric compound containing as its sole unsaturation a single olefinic double bond, such as vinyl acetate, vinylidene chloride or diethyl maleate. The plasticizing copolymer may be derived from butadiene and acrylonitrile, containing from 15-40 per cent by weight of combined acrylonitrile. The proportion of vinyl resin: plasticizer in the tie layer and protective layer may be from 50 : 50 to 80 : 20. The layers are preferably applied to the conductor as latex dispersions. The vinyl resin and plasticizer latex may be produced by adding the monomeric components of either the vinyl resin or the butadiene-acrylonitrile copolymer to a preformed latex of the other and polymerizing the added monomeric components in this pre-formed latex itself. A stabilizer such as an organo-metallic compound containing tin or lead may be added to increase light-fastness. Specification 557,268, [Group VIII], is referred to.
