Abstract
740,043. Electric heating resistances. HYNES, L. P. March 23, 1954, No. 8492/54. Class 39(3). An electric heater line which may be used for thawing ice around gates of hydro-electric plants and for preventing freezing or for heating air, gases, water, oil, tar or chemicals in conduits in which the heater is inserted comprises a chain of insulators 44 carrying heater elements 43, each insulator being mounted on a strap 40 and secured by a pair of lugs 55 bent up from the strap, Figs. 1,3. Fig. 5 shows a protective pipe 58 for the heater and each insulator has openings 481 adapted to receive a helical resistance element or a strip resistance, Figs. 6, 7 (not shown). To facilitate longitudinal movement of the strap 40 during its expansion and contraction and to permit insertion and removal of long lengths of heater inside the protective pipe, rollers, balls or pimples may be provided beneath the strap, Figs. 15, 16, 17 (not shown). A conduit containing the medium to be heated may be bent at intervals 78, Fig. 18, to enable the protective pipe 58 to expand longitudinally, packing glands 80 providing access to the heater parts in the conduit. Where no bends are formed in the conduit, ends of the protective pipes may be given a gradual bend and pass out through openings in the conduit to which the ends are welded, Fig. 19 (not shown). Radial, supporting elements may be welded to the protective pipe and slidably engage the interior of the conduit, Fig. 20 (not shown). When joining two heater lengths end to end inside the protective pipe, terminal blocks 45, insulating tubes 97 and a protective metal band 98 may be used and the straps 40 made to overlap, Fig. 23. For heating several fluid-conveying conduits within a single duct, the conduits and a protective pipe containing a line heater may be spaced within the duct by means of frames located at intervals along the length of the duct, Fig. 30 (not shown). Fins may be provided on the protective pipe. A moisture and explosion proof termination for a cable' joined to the heater is described, Figs. 28, 29 (not shown).
