Abstract

739,149. Sighting devices. CONTRAVES AKT.-GES. Dec. 24, 1953 [Dec. 24, 1952; Dec. 21, 1953], No. 35891/53. Class 97 (1). [Also in Group XL (a)] In a sighting device in which the object sighted is viewed by reflection in a plane mirror through which light from a mask is projected to allow the object or the mark to be viewed in superposition, the mirror is formed by an interference layer reflecting light of all wavelengths except those in a region above 600 millimicrons, and transmitting in that region. As shown, the object O is viewed by reflection at a prism 4 and interference layer 5 in superposition with the image m<SP>1</SP> 1 , m<SP>1</SP> 2 of a mark m formed from light pass- . 281 ing through a lens 9. For daylight use the mark is illuminated by daylight but for use at night a source operated by an electric battery may be used. This source ernits light in the red region above 600 mÁ which passes through the interference layer 5 while the latter reflects light from the object which, at night, is stated to be deficient in the said red region so that no visible light from the object is lost due to the mirror 5. An alternative source comprises a layer 16 of zinc sulphide and manganese actuated to fluorescence by an admixture of radioactive material. Alternatively the radioactive material may be formed as a layer 18 on a plate 17, the member 15 bearing the sulphide layer 16 being slidable to bring the latter into contact with the layer 18 when illumination is required and may be withdrawn to avoid exhaustion of the material of the layer 16 when no illumination is required.
