Abstract

A heat insulator consists of cork meal treated with cellular polystyrene or polyvinyl chloride, the cells of which are preferably closed and which fills the cavities between the particles of cork. Porosity may be obtained by adding ammonium bicarbonate to the mix and subsequently heating in a mould. Alternatively the binding agent and an added agent is heated under pressure so that the evolved gas cannot escape, and after cooling the mass is comminuted, mixed with the cork, and the whole reheated.ALSO:A heat insulation body consists of cork meal treated with a binding agent which comprises cells which are preferably closed, the binding agent filling the cavities between the particles of cork. The preferred binding agent is pitch or bitumen and the porosity may be effected by the addition of ammonium bicarbonate with subsequent heating to produce gas whereupon the whole is moulded. Alternatively the binding agent and an added raising agent is heated under pressure so that the evolved gas cannot escape, and after cooling the mass is comminuted. This mass is subsequently mixed with the cork and the whole re-heated.
