Abstract
739,002. Cigarettes; making mouthpieces. KRISTINUS, GES. April 24, 1953 [April 25, 1952; Jan. 20, 1953], No. 11446/53. Class 130. A filter tip comprising natural fibres of vegetable origin has a flow resistance at least 30 per cent, preferably from 30 to 50 per cent, that of the complete cigarette, which lies between 120 mm. and 180 mm. water column at a flow rate of 1600 c.c. per minute. The fibres may be cleaned cotton, or cellulose obtained from pine or spruce wood by chemical or biological decomposition, and have, naturally or after mechanical loosening, a density lower than 0.12 mg. per mm.<3>, e.g. down to 0.01 mg. per mm<3>. Between 5 and 30 per cent of asbestos fibres may be incorporated. The filter tip may be enclosed in a cardboard or strong paper tube and combined with a crepe paper filter or perforated disc on the mouth side thereof. In a method of determining the flow resistance of cigarettes to enable them to be manufactured with filter tips in accordance with the invention, a cigarette 29 under test has air forced through it for a given time from a reservoir 9 pressurized by a jet pump 1, and under a head indicated by manometers 19, 20, the air passing into a calibrated displacement vessel 34 for measurement of the volume passed.
