Abstract

738,743. Valves. THACKRAY, Ltd., C. F. March 17, 1953 [Dec. 17, 1951], No. 29476/51. Class 135. [Also in Group VI] A draw-off tap or cock through which sterilizing fluid is passed prior to the passage of sterile liquid therethrough (see, Group VI) comprises a body portion 1 adapted for connection to a supply of sterile liquid 9, a bore 11 within the body for the passage of sterile fluid communicating with an outlet nozzle 3 provided on the body portion, a plunger 19 slidably mounted within the body portion having a valve 13 at one end for closing engagement with a seating 12 on the adjacent end of the bore, to interrupt the passage of sterile fluid through the bore, a flexible diaphragm 22 at the opposite end of the plunger, means operable to effect movement of the diaphragm to slide the plunger in a direction to lift the valve or washer from its seating to permit the passage of sterile fluid through the tap or cock, and an opening or openings 44 in the body of the tap or cock adapted for connection to a supply of sterilizing fluid or medium. As shown, attached to one end of the main tubular body 1 is an extension piece 2 provided with the discharge nozzle 3 and housing a spigot 14 carrying a washer 13 held against seating 12 by a spring 16 and being released therefrom by movement of a rod 19 mounted in a tube 11 through which flows sterile liquid from a chamber 9 fed from 10 on pressing a pedal 32 which depresses a diaphragm 22 to which the other end of the rod is connected. A tube 41 provided in the body portion connects an inlet 44 for admission of sterilizing liquid with the extension piece and nozzle. In a modification (Fig. 2, not shown) instead of the foot-pedal mechanism there is provided a link mechanism which when pulled causes the diaphragm to be pressed inwardly. As shown in Fig. 3 a modified conventional "screw-down " tap is provided with a valve-controlled inlet 59 for sterilizing liquid on the outlet side of washer 51 which is mounted on the end of a screw-down plunger 48 rotatable by a handle 49 to adjust its position with reference to the seating 52 to allow the passage of sterile liquid through pipe 54 to the nozzles.
