Abstract

<PICT:0738384/IV (a)/1> Bubble-free, fibre-forming polymers are made by preparing a crude polymer in the liquid state by continuous polymerisation or polycondensation at substantially atmospheric pressure, continuously conveying the liquid polymer into a settling vessel, allowing the polymer to stand in the vessel for a period of time not substantially shorter than one hour while the polymer gradually moves from the top of the bottom of the vessel solely under the influence of gravity, whereby gaseous bubbles in the polymer rise to form a separate scummy layer over bubble-free liquid polymer, and continuously drawing off the bubble-free liquid polymer from the bottom of the vessel. Polymers referred to are polyesters and polyamides. Molten polymer from a continuous polymerization tube 10 is pumped via a spinneret 13 into a heated settling vessel 11 to form a pool of polymer the upper level of which may be automatically regulated. Bubbles rising to the top are carried away either by passing a stream of inert gas over the pool or by applying vacuum. Polymer from the bottom of vessel 11 is pumped to spinnerets 17. In modifications (1) the settling vessel 11 is elongated whereby further polymerization occurs concurrently with the settling (2) one settling vessel is fed from a plurality of polymerization tubes.
