Abstract

<PICT:0664311/IV (a)/1> Polyamides are continuously formed, e.g. from lactams or o -amino fatty acids by feeding a solution 2 of the raw material in an inert volatile solvent, such as water or aqueous or non-aqueous lower aliphatic alcohols, into a heated reaction chamber 4, the level of the molten mass being maintained constant by a float valve 5, 6 and an inert atmosphere being formed by the vapour of the solvent. A constant pressure is maintained by a constant head 11 of condensed vapour produced by a reflux condenser 12 and overflow 14. The solution 2 may be preheated by using it as coolant for the condenser. Polymer is continuously extruded in the form of fibres, ribbons, bars, &c. by pump 7 through filter 8 and spinneret 9. The container 1 for the solution may be heated. A thermometer and manometer may be included in the apparatus.ALSO:<PICT:0664311/III/1> Polymers are continuously formed, e.g. from lactams or w-amino fatty acids by feeding a solution of the raw material in an inert volatile solvent, such as water or aqueous or non - aqueous lower aliphatic alcohols, into a heated reaction chamber 4, the level of the molten mass being maintained constant by a float valve 5, 6 and an inert atmosphere being formed by the vapour of the solvent.
