Abstract
738,283. Fluid-actuated valves. MEDICAL & INDUSTRIAL EQUIPMENT, Ltd., and CHILDERHOUSE, E. P. Sept. 29, 1953 [July 28, 1952], No. 18988/52. Class 135. [Also in Group VI] A valve arrangement for use in resuscitation and anaesthesia comprises an inlet 1, a first outlet 4, an inlet closure member, e.g. diaphragm 2 controlling a passage 3a, 6a from the inlet to the outlet, a passage from the first outlet to a second outlet 6b controlled by a closure member 5, and a link 7 between the closure members whereby they can close only one passage at a time, so that inlet or first outlet pressure tends to operate the respective closure member to open its associated passage when closed and keep it open when open, the pressure acting over a smaller area when the closure member closes its passage and a larger area when it opens it. The inlet is connected via two reducing valves to an oxygen cylinder, and the outlet to a patient's lungs. The inlet pressure forces the diaphragms to the left to close the second passage and gas flows to the lungs. When the lungs have been fully inflated the pressure build up moves the diaphragms to the right and the gas exhausts to atmosphere at 6b until the pressure has been substantially reduced, because the inlet pressure now acts over a small area of the inlet diaphragm and the outlet pressure over a large area of the outlet diaphragm.
