738,181. Variable-speed gearing. ROWLANDS, T., and MOLINS MACHINE CO., Ltd. Jan. 1, 1954 [Jan. 16, 1953], No. 1353/53. Class 80 (2). Relates to gearing, particularly for machines making corrugated boarding, of the type in which cone-shaped expanding pulleys 4, 5 on driving and driven shafts 2, 3 are connected by a V-velt 9 and the flanges of each pulley are moved to adjust the velocity ratio by control arms 8 pivoted at 16. According to the invention, the ends of the arms 8 are formed as arcs 18a and are engaged by supporting means such as rollers 19, to relieve the pivots 16 of any substantial stress. The rollers 19 are mounted at the ends of pivoted links 20 and the pressure with which they engage the arcs 18a is adjusted by screws 22. The centres of the control arms 8 are pivoted at 18 to links 17 in turn pivoted at 16 to guide blocks 14 slidable in guides 15 in the gear case 1; the guide blocks 14 have threaded engagement with a rod 13 rotated to permit adjustment of the pivot points, &c. The velocity ratio is controlled by rotating a two part, oppositely handed screw 11 carrying nuts having pin-and-slot connections with the ends of the control arms 8.
