The apparatus comprises a housing 1 having an inlet 2 and an outlet 3, an inwardly-directed flange 22 on the inner periphery of a cylindrical chamber formed between the inlet and outlet, an assembly comprising two sets of centrallyapertured alternate plate members, one set 12 having a solid outer flange and a recessed inner flange and the other set 13 having a recessed outer flange and a solid inner flange, and one of the sets, e.g. the latter, being perforate and means such as a shaft 33 and upper and lower springs 39, 34 for securing the plate members together, the assembly being supported on the flange 22 by a plate 32. Liquid being filtered passes into the centre of the assembly, flows outward through the recessed inner flanges, downward through, e.g., mesh screens 46 on the perforate plates 13 and outward through the recessed outer flanges. Preferably each plate member has a diametrical strap 27 with an orifice 28 through which the shaft 33 extends. The plate 32 may have a looped handle 47 engageable by a cover 8 to hold the assembly in place. In Figs. 4 and 5 (not shown) the spring members 34 and 39, rod 33 and straps 27 are dispensed with ; the plate 32 has three apertured lugs extending over the central opening and rods passing through these lugs connect the plate with a plate at the bottom of the stack.
