Abstract

737,959. Motor vehicle steering gear. PAUTRAT, L. O. L. Aug. 7, 1953 [Aug. 25, 1952], No. 21828/53. Classes 79(3) and 79(5). [Also in Group XXXVII] In a vehicle steering system the steering column is formed by two normally aligned portions 3, 4 articulated together, the upper portion 3 carrying a steering wheel 1 and being connected to the vehicle by a shock absorber adapted under the impact of the driver's body on the steering wheel to yield in a continuously resisting manner. The object of the invention is to minimize injuries to drivers in vehicle crashes. As shewn in Fig. 1, the portions 3, 4 are interconnected by a universal joint 6, the portion 4 being mounted in a bearing 13 carried by a bracket 7. The portion 3 passes through a hole 11 in a rubber block 9, the hole aligning with a split in the block so that under the driver's impact the portion 3 moves up into the split. In another embodiment, Fig. 3, the rubber block is replaced by a spring shock absorber 17 connected to the portion 3 by a rod 16. Movement of the portion 3 under impact causes the ignition circuit to be interrupted. An antitheft device may be combined with the apparatus in the form of a device separating the portions of the column with locking means interposed. The dashboard ahead of the steering column may include a rubber plate permitting a greater angle of movement of the steering column and the shock absorber may be in the form of a hydraulic dash-pot or leaf- or coil-spring means.
