Abstract

A composition suitable for moulding battery containers, radio cabinets and chemical machinery requiring high impact and resistance, comprises (a) 5-45 part of a phenol-furfural condensate plus 10 per cent catalyst, (b) 5-30 parts neoprene plus 8 per cent curing and control agents, and (c) 40-75 part filler which may be coal dust, clay, litharge, talc or infusorial earth and preferably contains about 1 per cent wetting agent, e.g. a fatty acid amine. The phenol-furfural condensate employed is preferably that described in Specification 695,210. Curing and control agents for the neoprene are magnesium oxide, zinc oxide or litharge or red lead. Mixing of the constituents is effected in a Banbury or other mixer followed by treatment on hot rolls which caused further polymerization of the resin preferably to the gel state. Alternatively, admixture may be effected by extrusion in a mixer provided with a pair of screws working in a casing divided into accurately controlled temperature zones. A triangular diagram is provided showing the limiting proportions of the ingredients and the effect on impact resistance of varying the proportions. Specification 637,446 also is referred to.
