Abstract
Chloro-nitro-phenthiazine-9-oxides containing at the most four negative substituents are prepared by nitrating phenthiazine with dilute nitric acid and then chlorinating the product in the resulting nitration mixture. Specified phenthiazine derivatives are monochloro-mononitro-, dichloro-mononitro-, dichloro-dinitro-, trichloro-mononitro- and monochloro-dinitrophenthiazine-9-oxide.ALSO:The invention comprises pesticidal and fungicidal compositions containing as the active ingredient one or more chloro-nitrophenthiazine-9-oxides which possess a total number of negative substituents ranging from 2 to 4, in admixture with a liquid diluent which is a non-solvent for the active substance, or with a solid diluent. Specified diluents are talc and cellulose pitch. The compositions may further contain a wetting agent, e.g. hydroxyethylated iso-octylphenol; an adherent agent, e.g. hydroxyethylated methyl cellulose, chalk; and also known fungicides. The compositions may be employed in the form of spraying or dusting preparations. Specified phenthiazine derivatives are monochloro-mononitro-, dichloro-mononitro-, dichloro-dinitro-, trichloro-mononitro- and monochloro-dinitro-phenthiazine-9-oxide.
