Abstract

737,629. Dynamometers. CELANESE CORPORATION OF AMERICA. Sept. 16, 1953 [Sept. 18, 1952], No. 25594/53. Class 106 (2). [Also in Group XXIX] A dynamometer for measuring tension in a running yarn comprises a movable member adapted to be engaged by the yarn and to be moved by any variation in the tension therein, means for applying an opposing force to the arm so as to restore its displacement, and means for indicating the force so applied. The yarn 13 passes over a roller 12 mounted on a lever 16 pivoted at 19. The pull on the arm 16 by the thread 13 is opposed by the pressure in a chamber 24 acting on the lever 16 through a diaphragm 31. Should the tension in the yarn 13 increase the lever 16 is tilted in a manner causing a member 39 thereon to deflect and open a valve 53 communicating with a pressure source. The pressure source, via the valve 53 and a passage 26, increases the pressure in the chamber 24 until the arm 16 is returned to its normal position and the valve 53 is closed. Should the tension in the thread 13 decrease, the arm 16 is forced upwardly at the roller end by the diaphragm 31, and a member 41 at the other end of the lever 16 depresses a valve 62 to release the pressure in the chamber 24 until the arm 16 returns to its normal position and the valve 62 closes. A pressure gauge 74, indicating the pressure in the chamber 24, is utilized to determine the tension in the thread 13 at any instant. A recording instrument 76 inscribes the pressures on a graduated chart which is moved at a constant speed.
