Abstract
737,386. Discharge apparatus. UNITED KINGDOM ATOMIC ENERGY AUTHORITY. May 22, 1953 [May 22, 1952], No. 12922/52. Class 39 (1). An electron discharge device, for example a cold-cathode tube, comprises a contained volume of an inert artificial radio-active gas having a half-life such that the discharge path is maintained in an ionized condition by the gas at least for the predetermined life time of the device and having a biological half-life such that the gas presents negligible health hazard when the container is broken. The radioactive gas may form the sole filling of the tube or may be added to a filling of inert gas or may be placed in a container adjacent the discharge path, which container may form one of the electrodes of the tube, preferably the cathode. The preferred radio-active gas is krypton 85.
