Abstract

737,349. Ammunition projectiles. DONNER, H. O. Aug. 11, 1953 [April 27, 1953], No. 22162/53. Class 9(1). A projectile 3 with folding fins 6 is centred in a mortar barrel by a sabot 7 of light metal which also acts as a gas check. Bores 8 in the shell casing house spring-pressed pins 9 engaging a safety ring 10 during transport. As the projectile is inserted in the mortar, the ring 10 is forced off the pins 9, which then move outwards to engage the barrel and so centre the projectile. After discharge of the projectile, the pins 9 are pushed out of the bores, the sabot is forced off by air resistance and the fins 6 unfold.
