Abstract

A priming composition for adhering fluorine-substituted polyethylene sheet to other materials comprises an elastomer and fluorine-substituted polyethylene, e.g. polytetrafluoroethylene, or polytrifluoromonochloroethylene. In examples: (1) a paste is prepared by stirring a mixture of a dispersion of polytrifluoromonochloroethylene in xylene and a silicone adhesive containing partially cured polydimethyl silicone rubber, benzoyl peroxide, and titanium dioxide; alternatively, natural rubber may be used in place of silicone, and (3) a solution of natural rubber in benzene or silicone rubber in carbon tetrachloride is mixed with an aqueous dispersion of polytetrafluoroethylene and a small amount of a non-ionic wetting agent. The natural or silicone rubber in either of these examples, may be substituted by copolymers of butadiene with acrylonitrile, styrene, or isobutylene, isobutylene-isoprene copolymer, or polychloroprene. Toluene is also quoted as solvent for particular elastomers in example (3).ALSO:The surface of fluorine-substituted polyethylene is rendered bondable, e.g. to elastomers or metals, by applying to at least a portion of the surface particles of an elastomer and particles of fluorine-substituted polyethylene to provide a priming coating and fusing the coating. The fluorine-substituted polyethylene may be polytetrafluoroethylene or polytrifluoromonochloroethylene and the elastomer may be natural rubber, silicone rubber, copolymers of butadiene with acrylonitrile, styrene, or isobutylene, isobutylene-isoprene copolymer, or polychloroprene. All the examples relate to coated or laminated sheets, but it is stated that the fluorine-substituted polyethylene need not be in sheet form.
