Abstract

A wax composition comprises a sweated wax with a boiling range spread of 200-300 DEG F. and a distilled wax with a boiling range spread of 30-100 DEG F., at 10 mm. mercury absolute pressure. In the drawing, a waxy crude oil is distilled in zone 1 and a waxy distillate fraction removed by line 5, mixed with solvent, for example methylethyl ketone and toluene, and passed to chilling zone 7. The mixture is filtered in zone 8; oil is removed by line 9 and slack wax and solvent are passed via line 11 to distillation zone 12, in which the solvent is removed. The slack wax is further refined in zones 15 and 36 by a sweating or solvent deoiling operation; part of this refined wax is then passed by line 39 to distillation zone 41 to <PICT:0737204/III/1> segregate a narrow cut refined wax fraction, which is blended with the wide boiling range wax from zone 36. The wide boiling range wax may also be further refined by treatment with sulphuric acid, fuller's earth or bauxite or by hydrogenation.
