Abstract

Moist, fibrous methyl cellulose is converted into a particulate form having a high rate of solubility by homogenizing under pressure fibrous methyl cellulose with a water content of 50-70 per cent by weight, grinding the homogenized product and subsequently drying at a temperature above the coagulation temperature (viz. 60 DEG C.) of methyl cellulose. Homogenization is effected in worm presses or kneading pumps which are preferably cooled. High-speed grinding-apparatus, such as a hammer basket-mill or the apparatus described in Specification 497,131, is employed. Before drying, the material may be sifted. During drying the material is preferably suspended in a gas current.
