Abstract

<PICT:0736963/III/1> <PICT:0736963/III/2> In depositing thin layers of viscous material of predetermined area and volume upon a surface, using a matrix having a recess in a face against which the surface to receive the deposit is engaged in such a manner as to close the recess, a quantity of the viscous material in excess of that required to fill the recess is fed through an inlet passage leading through the body of the matrix to the recess, and the viscous material surplus to that required to fill the recess, together with the air contained in the recess when otherwise empty, is permitted to emerge from the recess through a further and separate outlet passage leading through the body of the matrix. As shown in Fig. 2, a sheet of material such as cardboard 4 is held by a platen 5 in firm contact with a matrix 1 having recesses 3 defined by ridges 2, the matrix 1 being arranged for rising and falling movement to permit the sheet 4 to be placed and clamped thereunder. Each recess 3 is provided with an inlet passage 6 and an outlet passage 7, of smaller diameter, extending through the matrix, the inlet passage being counterbored at 8 to receive a metering pump having a cylindrical body 11 in which a piston 14 is arranged for reciprocating movement by a bar 24 acting on a tappet 27 and against the action of a return-spring 25. The bar 24 may be arranged to rise and fall with the matrix, and to make an extended downward movement after that of the matrix has ceased. The pump chamber 15 is connected through apertures 16 with a trunk ring 17 and a pipe 18 connected with a reservoir for the viscous material, and through a non-return valve 19 to the inlet passage 6. The outlet passage 7 is connected with a pipe 22, leading to a suitable receiver, which may be the reservoir connected to the pipe 18; or the pipe 22 may be connected into the pipe 18. The outlet passage 7 may be provided with a non-return valve 23. In the arrangement of Fig. 3, the matrix 1 is mounted with its recessed face uppermost, and the platen 5 is movable. The inlet passage 6 is connected by a pipe 30 to a metering pump 32, which is connected by a pipe 33 to the lower end of a reservoir 34, and is operated by a lever 36. The outlet passage 7 is connected by a pipe 31, through an adjustable restrictor valve 35 to a point near the upper end of the reservoir 34.
