Abstract
736,542. Thermionic-cathode constructions. EDISON SWAN ELECTRIC CO., Ltd. March 26, 1953 [March 28, 1952], No. 8427/53. Class 39 (1). A therinionic cathode comprises two or more electron-emissive filaments helically wound and spaced apart, together with one or more support wires wound helically in the opposite sense and of appreci. ably smaller winding pitch, forming a mesh assembly. In Fig. 2 the support is a single helical wire 4, it is shown as passing alternately over and under the filament helices 1, 2, 3, but it may be wholly inside or outside. The support helix may be of, or covered with, insulating material, and may have notches to locate the filament wires, Figs. 3a, 3b (not shown), or stops for the same purpose, Figs. 3c, 3d, 3e (not shown). When more than one supporting helix is provided, each may be arranged to support every second or third filament helix only, so that the filament helices constitute separate groups which can be fed from a polyphase supply. All the wires may be of stranded construction, and Figs. 4a, 4b (not shown) illustrate methods of attaching their ends to terminal plates. The input conductors may be coated with zirconium for gettering.
