Abstract
Stable dispersions for intravenous feeding comprise fat and lecitin dispersed as 0.5-1 micron particles in an aqueous solution of a sugar. The fat is preferably a vegetable oil which remains clear and fluid at temperatures in the range 0-15 DEG C., e.g. is sesame or olive oil. The sugar may be dextrose or levulose. The dispersion may contain 20-30 per cent of fat, 0.5-2 per cent of lecithin and 5 per cent of sugar. According to an example, pyrogen-free sesame oil in isopropanol, pyrogen-free soya bean lecithin in chloroform, and dextrose in pyrogen-free water are mixed, and heated to 45 DEG C., in a high-speed stirrer, more water is stirred in, the resulting dispersion is concentrated, and the organic solvents are removed, by treatment in a long tube evaporator at 20 DEG C. under reduced pressure, and finally the product is sterilized by autoclaving at 120 DEG C. for 30 minutes.
