Abstract
1331833 Carboxylic acids DYNAMIT NOBEL AG 1 March 1971 5719/71 Heading C2C Light-coloured, colour-stable fatty acids (C 8 -C 18 ) are prepared by heating the crude acids in the absence of aeration with (i) vanadium oxide or an alkyl vanadate (ii) an alkyl ester of zirconic acid or (iii) an aromatic carboxylic acid or alkyl ester thereof, and distilling under reduced pressure. The aromatic carboxylic acid or alkyl ester may be used together with an alkyl ester of titanic or zirconic acid, and the preferred conditions are a temperature range of 200-240‹ C. under normal pressure with a proportion of 0À1-0À6% by weight of (i), 0À1-1% by weight of (ii) and 0À1 to 0À2% by weight of (iii). The crude fatty acids may be from the refining of edible oils and fats or from synthetic fatty acids and examples describe the treatment of coconut oil, palm kernel 3 cotton seed oil, tallow, soya, and oleic fatty acids and a crude fatty acid of 20% palm, 20% coconut, and 60% tallow.
