Abstract

736,396. Knitting-machines. REINER, Inc., R. Oct. 16, 1951, No. 24066/51. Class 74 (2). The driving speed of a variable speed drive which continuously drives the rotatable warp beam of a warp knitting machine and which, in operation, is driven by the main drive of the machine, is automatically adjustable in dependence on changes in the tension of the warp yarns, so as to maintain a substantially constant tension in them. When the tension on the warp yarns 32 or 60 increases or decreases beyond a predetermined amount, the output speed of a stepless variable speed drive 58 or 80 is adjusted through mechanism linked to the tension bar 34 or 62, to restore the yarn tension to normal. The variable speed drives are driven by gearing from a shaft 86, in turn driven by the main camshaft 22. In Figs. 1 and 3, movement of the tension bars swings a neutralizing member 54 or 76 which normally disables opposed pawls 144, 146, or 176, 178 constantly operated through linkwork from face cams 130, 172 on the shaft 86 and ultimately allows one or other of the pair concerned to rack round the appropriate one of opposed ratchets 150, 154 or 180, 182, keyed to the variable speed drive adjusting shaft 56 or 78. The basic speed of each warp beam can be set by hand, in the first instance. An excessive change in tension will cause operation of machine-stopping switch 190. In Fig. 4, the pawls 176, 178 for the drive 80 are operated from an eccentric 196 on the cam-shaft 22, whilst in the case of the drive 58, the pawls 204, 206 are moved together, one way or the other, by linkwork from the tension bar 34 until one or the other moves beyond control of a fixed neutralizing member 198 and engages its ratchet. In Fig. 9 sufficient movement of the tension bar beyond the mean position closes the appropriate one of two opposed switches and so drives one way or the other a reversible electric motor 224, or 248, connected through worm and worm-wheel to the variable speed drive adjusting shaft; excessive change in tension again causes the closing of a machinestopping switch. In Fig. 13, movement of the tension bar adjusts the pistons 260, 262, 264 of a hydraulic regulator valve and so determines whether fluid from a pump shall flow through one or other of two hydraulic motors replacing the electric motors 224, 248 and the direction of that flow.
