Abstract
The gamma isomer is preferentially extracted from a mixture of benzene hexachloride isomers by extracting the isomers with methanol and water, the weight ratio (R) of methanol to benzene hexachloride and the weight per cent of the water (P) contained in the methanol being given by P=a log10R+b, wherein a is an integer having a value between 20-25 and b is a number varying with temperature according to the equation b=b30 - 0.345(t - 30), where b30 has a value between -10 and 15 and t is the extraction temperature in degrees centigrade; the gamma enriched fraction is then recovered from the resulting solution. Preferably b10 has a value between -5 and 10 and may suitably be between -0.5 and -1.5 or more, preferably between -0.92 and -0.94. The value of a is preferably between 22 and 24 and is most suitably 23. The aqueous methanol used for the extraction may suitably contain 6-16 per cent of water, preferably about 13 per cent.
