Abstract

736,107. Electrolytically depositing nickel. WILMOT-BREEDEN, Ltd. July 6, 1953 [Dec. 24, 1952], No. 32721/52. Class 41. In a process for the electrodeposition of nickel an asymmetric alternating current is used which is rendered asymmetrical by means including a rectifier and a resistance arranged in parallel, the larger half-wave effecting the deposition and the smaller removing a part of the deposit. An anode b is connected to a transformer a by a circuit containing two branches in parallel. One branch includes a rectifier d, and the other includes an oppositely acting rectifier e in series with a variable resistance f. A variable resistance g is in series with both branches ; h, an article to be plated, is connected directly to the transformer a. The half-wave which deposits nickel passes through rectifier d, and the half-wave which partially removes nickel passes through rectifier e, the value of this latter half-wave being determined by resistance f. Best results are obtained if the bath contains a trace of copper.
