Abstract

Compositions for use in making floor-coverings comprise vinyl chloride-acetate copolymer, plasticizer, asbestos fibre, pigment, limestone, and lead carbonate or polyvinyl chloride, asbestos fibre, tricresyl phosphate, lead carbonate, limestone and pigment, e.g. Hansa yellow, Monastral Blue and red iron oxide.ALSO:A variegated sheet is made by calendering either (a) a mixture of small pieces of thermoplastic compositions of two or more colours or (b) a supporting sheet of thermoplastic composition with small pieces of thermoplastic compositions of one or more other colours. Then one or more of these variegated sheets is superposed on a base sheet of a compatible thermoplastic composition of substantially the same colour as one colour in the variegated sheet, the sheets are joined superficially, and the joined sheets are hot-calendered with substantial reduction of thickness: this second calendering may be at right-angles to the first calendering. The thickness of the base sheet may be 5-20 times that of the variegated sheet. The thermoplastic compositions may have a basis of polyvinyl chloride or copolymer of vinyl chloride with vinyl acetate or vinylidene chloride. In one example a variegated sheet 0.040 inch thick is made by hot calendering on a three-bowl calender from 80 per cent of cream colour crumb and 20 per cent of green colour crumb, the first nip producing a sheet 0.06 inch thick and the second nip reducing the sheet to 0.04 inch. This sheet is stored for future use. Then a similar sheet 0.4 inch thick having cream colour only is made on a hot mill, and whilst it is still hot the variegated sheet, preheated, is placed on it and the composite sheet is run through the mill to reduce its thickness to 0.4 inch. Finally the composite sheet is trimmed and fed through a three-bowl calender at right angles to the first calendering, the first nip reducing the sheet to 0.05 inch thick and the second to 0.03 inch. To produce long lengths the composite sheet is cut into planks of regular width that are fed successively to the first nip. In another example two variegated sheets are placed together and joined to the base sheet. The material may be adhered to a backing sheet.
