Abstract

The invention comprises a ,b -epoxycarbonitriles of formula <FORM:0735990/IV (b)/1> wherein R1 is an aliphatic, aromatic, alicyclic or heterocyclic radical, R2 is an aliphatic, aromatic, alicyclic or heterocyclic radical or a hydrogen atom, or R1 and R2 taken together with the b -carbon atom constitute an alicyclic group. The compounds are prepared by reacting a halogen acetonitrile (preferably chloroacetonitrile) with an appropriate aldehyde or ketone under anhydrous conditions and in presence of a condensing agent such as sodium methylate or lithium amide, preferably at low temperature (e.g. -80 DEG C.). Equal molecular amounts of aldehyde (or ketone) and condensing agent are preferably reacted with a 1.5 times larger molecular amount of halogen acetonitrile. Specified oxo-reactants are acetophenone, benzaldehyde, cyclohexanone, cyclopentane-methanol and nicotine aldehyde. The examples describe the preparation of b -phenylglycidonitrile and 3-phenyl-2,3-epoxy-propane carbonitrile.
