Abstract

The fastness of dyeings with substantive dyestuffs on cellulosic textile materials is improved by treating the dyed material with a polymer of a vinyl compound having a basic nitrogen atom but not a cyclically bound carbonyl group in its molecule, or a copolymer of two such compounds or of one such compound and another polymerizable compound, or their water-soluble salts or quaternary ammonium compounds. Treatment with a water-soluble salt of copper, cobalt or nickel, such as the chloride, sulphate or acetate, may also be effected before, during or after the treatment with the polymer. Specified polymers, p which may be applied as true or colloidal solutions or as emulsions or suspensions, are those of N-vinylimidazole and its derivatives such as N-vinyl-2-methylimidazole, N - vinyl - 2 - phenylimidazole, N - vinyl - 2 - methylolimidazole, N - vinyl - benzimidazole and 2 - vinyl - benzimidazole, 2-vinyl-pyridine, aminostyrenes such as m-dimethylamino-styrene and the polymers obtainable from dimethylaminohydroxyethylvinyl ether. Numerous examples are given.
