A sack-filling machine comprises one or more filling stations at which are located a weighing hopper 18 for granular material having a discharge valve 17 actuated by a solenoid 16, a filling nozzle 5, a pair of grippers 14 which are arranged to embrace a sack on the nozzle and are mounted on a reciprocable member 2, and a continuouslyoperated endless delivery conveyer 1 for the filled sacks. At the commencement of a cycle of operations, the member 2 is in the right-hand position and the grippers are open. The operator then hangs a sack on the nozzle and operates a handle 20 controlling a valve 19 to admit compressed air to a cylinder 4 containing a piston 3 which is coupled to the member, thus causing the latter to move to the left to the position shown. At the end of this movement, abutments 6, 6<SP>1</SP> engage levers 7, 7<SP>1</SP> which actuate switches 8, 9 to energize a solenoid 10, operating a valve 11, and the solenoid 16, whereby compressed air is admitted behind a piston 12 to effect closure of the grippers and the valve 17 is opened to discharge a weighed quantity of material into the sack. One of a series of abutments 22 on the conveyer 1 then engages a lever A<SP>1</SP> to cause opening of a switch 24 and closure of a switch 23, whereby the solenoid 10 is de-energized to effect closure of the valve 11 and a solenoid 25 is energized to open an exhaust valve 26 so that the grippers are opened to allow the filled sack to fall on to the conveyer. In the meantime, the operator has released the handle 20, so that as soon as the grippers open the member 2 returns to its initial position. The abutments on the conveyer may also control the discharge of filled sacks from the nozzle of a second filling station B.
