Abstract

1,226,293. Sealing valve bags. BILLERUDS A.B. 27 Jan., 1969 [9 Feb., 1968], No. 4391/69. Heading B8C. An apparatus for sealing valves of bags 2 comprising a conveyer 1 for feeding bags each with a valved end portion first in the feeding direction of travel and with a valve opening 3 disposed at one side of the centre line of the bag, an abutment 5 capable of being introduced into the movement path of the bags to engage the front end of each bag in succession at a position at a distance from the opening end of the valve for opening the valve, a device 8 for spraying adhesive into the valve openings, the abutment and the spraying device being arranged on a carriage 13 which is movable back and forth above and parallel to the conveyor and which is adapted to be moved in a forward direction of the conveyer with a speed lower than the speed of the conveyer and means 9 for closing the valves. It is the difference in speed between the carriage and the conveyer which cause the abutment to open the valve of each bag. In the construction shown the carriage is attached to a piston 11 which is reciprocated in a cylinder 12 by hydraulic fluid, the abutment 5 is one arm of a two-armed lever 17 which is mounted on the carriage by means of a shaft 14 and is swung by means of an hydraulic piston and cylinder unit 15 and 16 alternately into and out of the path of each bag on the conveyer 1. The device 8 is a spray gun which is pivoted on a shaft on the carriage 13 and which is swung by means of an hydraulic piston and cylinder unit 18, 19 via a lever 20 in such a way that the mouth-piece 22 of the gun describes an arc in front of the valve opening 3 of each bag. The closing means 9 is one arm of a two-armed lever 28 which is mounted above the conveyer and which is swung into and out of the path of the bags by means of an hydraulic piston-andcylinder unit 29, 30; when it is in the path of the bags it presses the valve flap 6 on to its seat 7 so that the adhesive holds the flap on to its seat. The movement of the carriage 13 is utilized to operate various switches which control the movements of the carriage, the levers 17 and 28 and the spray gun 8; of these switches only two are shown, the first is a switch 25 which when actuated by an actuating rail 24 on the carriage causes the spray gun to be swung in the arc and the adhesive to be sprayed out of the mouthpiece 22; the other switch 26 is engaged by the lever 20, which swings the spray gun, at the limit of its movement, to cut off the supply of adhesive and cause the spray gun to return to its original position. The means 9 can be arranged to print a mark on each bag.
