Abstract

Bis-(hydroxyaryl) substituted alkanes are prepared by condensing a phenolic compound with a carbonylic compound in an acidic medium and in the presence of methyl mercaptan. The acidifying agent is preferably hydrochloric acid present to the extent of approximately 6 per cent of the weight of the desired product when formed in theoretical yield. The mixture comprising the reactants, the acidifying agent and methylmercaptan is preferably continuously introduced into a reaction vessel so that the residence time is from 15 minutes to 2 hours. Reaction temperatures are preferably between 45 DEG and 80 DEG C. In the examples phenol is condensed with acetone to form diphenylol propane. Specification 735,216 is referred to.
