Means for operating the stem' 6, Fig. 2, of a valve comprises a rotary, reversible, fluid-operated motor 13, Fig. 1, driving a worm 7 through a clutch 114 held engaged by fluid applied to a bellows device 16, the worm meshing with a wormwheel 5 keyed to a nut engaging threads on the stem 6 whereby rotation of the motor causes axial movement of the stem. The fluid is preferably compressed air and the motor is controlled by a valve unit 20, Fig. 3, actuable by a rod 26 attached to a diaphragm or piston 22 subjected, in a chamber 21, to a control pressure applied manually or automatically from a remote point, against an adjustable spring 23. -The unit 20, Fig. 4, comprises a casing with inlet 36, exhaust ports 37, 38 and motor ports 39, 40, and valve members 28, 29 having pistons 30, 31 respectively controlled by valves 43, 44 to connect one or the other motor port to the inlet. Inlet pressure acts through orifices 34, 35 in the pistons to hold the members in the positions shown. Thus, e.g., downward movement of rod 26 opens valve 44 to exhaust chamber 42, whereupon member 29 moves to connect port 40 to the inlet. Subsequent rotation of the motor raises the stem 6 which carries a cam 45 abutting a bell-crank lever 25, which supports the spring 23, to compress the spring and re-centre rod 26. Port 40 is then cut off from the inlet and the valve stem stops in a position corresponding to the control pressure in chamber 21. In another arrangement, the piston or diaphragm acts directly on a piston valve, and the nut engaging stem 6, drives a sprocket connected by a chain to another sprocket which rotates a screw to vary the force of a loading spring on the valve. The worm may be driven by hand wheel 12 via a clutch 10 which can only be engaged when clutch 114 is disengaged by releasing the pressure on device 16.
