734,976. Knitting-machine needles. NANCO, Inc. May 11, 1953, No. 13041/53. Class 74 (2). A machine needle having a sliding tongue, has the stem of the tongue sliding in a groove in the shank of the needle, the edges of the groove being closed over to secure the stem in position, Figs. 2 and 5. Clearance space is afforded between the stem and shank by forming the stem square and rounding the corners. A portion of one edge of the groove may fold over the stem further than a portion of the other edge, Fig. 8, and may be so arranged that the upper and lower portions of the stem are covered by opposite edge portions of the groove. Lubricating means 44, in the form of a block of graphite or other lubricant constituting or carrying material, may be held between part of the edges of the groove against the stem. The tongue is provided with an inclined V- shaped groove 42 at its end which co-operates with a bevelled point 40 of the hook to close the hook.
